Dave Williams was given his nickname “Tiger” when he was 5 years old by his minor hockey coach in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. He was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1974, 2nd round, 31st overall from the Swift Current Broncos of the WCHL. Tiger was best known as the NHL's all time penalty minute leader. In 14 seasons, he accumulated 3,966 minutes in the sin bin, plus another 455 in the playoffs, also a record. While wearing the offered jersey, Tiger racked up 486 penalty minutes and became one of the fiercest NHL enforcers the league had ever seen.
Typical enforcers wear, the jersey shows heavy game use with the Rawlings tag size 44 torn and frayed yet well secured in the neck. It has six repairs, 2 on the bottom white hem, one on the bottom of the hem, 2 on the back and one pinched from behind repair on the right arm. Double garter belt fight strap sewn in and repaired multiple times but still secure. Heavy sweat stains, holes, stick marks, general filth, pilling, fight damage to the left and right arm cuff, hem damage due to heavy stick slashes, board scrapes and burns, tears, white stripe discolouration, stick abuse and of course blood staining from superior fight abuse. All the identifiers show incredible two season use with heavy sweat stains and very soft to the touch. The original and stretched out tie down lace is still intact. Inside the jersey shows heavy pilling at the elbows with material runs and loose threads with white pilling from an under shirt. One of the photo matches shows an indentation in the Leafs crest under the “S” while checking Ed Westfall of the New York Islanders. The next photo match shows the stick marks on the crest beside the “L” in Leafs and at the edge of the crest. All the photos also show the exact type of stretched out lacing you see on this almost 50 year old relic. This soon to be iconic #22, durene game used jersey was worn for the start of his career on the road in 1975 after Rawlings had changed their tagging. Tiger also wears this jersey for the playoffs in '75 and the following 75-76 season. The Match to the puck marks on the crest is from 1976. Don’t let this rare opportunity to own one of the all time greatest enforcers rookie jerseys slip through your fingers, you may not get another chance.
Although Williams was known for his role as an enforcer, he was also able to score goals. During his best season in Toronto, he scored 22 goals in 55 games before being traded to the Vancouver Canucks part way through that season. He scored 8 more goals in 23 games that season with Vancouver for, at that time, a career best 30 goals. He played on five different NHL teams during his career. The next season, 1980–81, in Vancouver, Williams scored a career high of 35 goals and 62 points while amassing a league leading 343 penalty minutes in 77 games. The 343 penalty minutes would be the third highest of his career. Those 35 goals were the most by any Canuck that year. That season, Williams earned a place in the mid-season All-Star game, having scored 27 goals by the All-Star break, and played on a line with Wayne Gretzky and Mike Bossy. He would play an integral role in the team's surprise run to the 1982 Stanley Cup Finals. Williams played in Vancouver until the end of the 1983–84 season.
While in Toronto for 6 seasons, he broke many Maple Leaf and NHL penalty minute records and led the league in time served twice with 338 in 1976–77 and 298 in 1978–79. He was traded to the Vancouver Canucks after 6 seasons with the Leafs on February 18, 1980. His other NHL stops included the Detroit Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings and ended his career in 1988 while playing for the Hartford Whalers.
