This Ron Ellis game used Canadien Fibreglass stick shows amazing use on the blade, front and back, with the bottom of the blade having been shaved down for puck control. There is a small crack where that work was done but the blade is completely solid. The top middle of the shaft has puck marks put on by Ellis for grip, he then taped the shaft for enhancing that same issue as these type sticks were slick from the factory. The date stamp is likely under that tape on this beauty with the rainbow accent just below and would show either 1979-80 or 1980-81 season. Ellis's name stamped between the 2 red plastic taped areas with 6 in blue marker above. Properly taped at the blade and butt end in Ellis style, this is one really nice stick from his last season or two in the NHL. The photos show this style of taping by Ellis during this era as well as the same stick type. Take this one home for your vintage or Maple Leafs collection. Ron Ellis was signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs and played junior hockey with the Toronto Marlboros of the Ontario Hockey Association from 1961-964. He played on the team that won the Memorial Cup in 1964. Ellis became a full-time Leaf in 1964-65, during his tenure he achieved remarkable milestones, including winning the Stanley Cup in 1967 and playing the iconic 1972 Summit Series against the Russian National team. Ellis earned an unusual tribute in 1968 when former Leafs star Ace Bailey, then working as a timekeeper at Maple Leaf Gardens, declared that he admired Ellis so much, he wanted the team to give his retired #6 to Ellis. Bailey's number had been retired following his career-ending injury in 1933. Ellis, who had been wearing #8, changed to #6 for the rest of his career, after which the number was re-retired. Ron Ellis played in the NHL for sixteen seasons all with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He won the Stanley Cup in 1967, the last time the Leafs hoisted the coveted trophy. In his 1,034 contests he scored 332 goals and assisted on 308 others. On October 17, 2016, Ellis was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame.
