The Type-2 Phaser pistol is arguably the most recognizable sci-fi weapon in pop culture. It is undeniably the most coveted hand prop from the beloved multi-generational blockbuster Star Trek franchise. This particular example was formerly housed in the Museum of Pop Culture, and has been authenticated by Greg Jein. Constructed of cast fiberglass, resin, tooled aluminum, acrylic, and other mixed-media components, the Phaser was used in multiple original series episodes. Aside from being one of the most popular characters on the series, Nichols was credited with a cutting-edge interracial kiss shared with "Captain Kirk" (William Shatner) in the historic episode "Plato's Stepchildren." The landmark TV kiss, occuring just one year after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized interracial marriage, was considered a controversial and groundbreaking advancement in the era of the Civil Rights movement and was just one of many markers of Nichols's involvement in activism for equality and acceptance in our culture. It also substantiated the Utopian vision of the game-changing universe of Star Trek. This Phaser specimen is one of exceedingly few Type-2 Phaser pistols to come to market, and with solid provenance from the star herself. Gifted to actress Nichelle Nichols by a prop master, the hand prop measures approx. 8.5 x 5.5 x 2 in. and exhibits expected age and production wear to surfaces. Comes with a letter of provenance from Nichelle Nichols and her manager stating that this piece was Nichol's and was displayed at the MoPop Museum. In vintage good condition.
