United Artists, 1961. Studio bound 40+page assemblage of Marilyn Monroe script and performance notes typed on 8 x 6.25 in. onion skin paper leaves and hand annotated by Monroe in pencil for her role in The Misfits. The green paper cover features a label typed, “Marilyn Monroe.” The document contains a series of Monroe’s isolated lines of dialog preceded by other actor’s lines that cue her responses and with her lines in all caps, i.e.: “(10) ......to physical violence against me. HE PERSISTENTLY (breaks off) MUST I SAY THAT WHY CAN’T I JUST SAY THAT HE WASN’T THERE I MEAN YOU COULD TOUCH HIM BUT HE WASN’T THERE” Throughout the document, Monroe has drawn lines through some dialogue, written notes on reactions and gestures, and generally broken down her performance of scenes and lines, i.e.; “(36) ……no cue BOY I’M HUNGRY [Monroe has handwritten] ’Stretch like a cat, see painted, follow him like kitten’ ......I got a surprise. YOU PAINTED IT OH IT MAKES IT SO BRIGHT IN HERE NOW HERE LET ME COOK YOU SHOULD HAVE WAKENED ME [Monroe has handwritten] ’Why didn’t you wake me up’” On the interior back cover Monroe has written, in full: “Nothing is coming but at least I can make the (an) effort” and “My thoughts are any place I Marilyn (possibly Rosilyn [sic]) wants to put them.” and in blue pen, “Copied : July 30, 1960.” This assemblage of highly personal notes demonstrates the seriousness with which Monroe regarded her work and the detail she pondered when curating every nuance of a performance. The production of the film was tumultuous with Marilyn’s divorce from her then husband and The Misfits screenwriter, Arthur Miller, sending the star to the hospital and halting production. This would be Monroe’s final project along with her co-star Clark Gable. For all the mythology about Monroe’s difficulties and insecurities, this historical document gives substance to the stories of her near desperate pursuit of artistry in her craft. Exhibiting age, production wear, and handling. Retaining some rust marks from paperclips. In vintage good condition.
