This artwork was used for the cover of a vintage Toronto Maple Leafs game program from the late 1930’s. This is a unique cover as it features the Leaf player wearing brown hockey pants. Seeing the Leafs uniform in colour then was a rare image for sure. The early Maple Leaf Gardens program covers featured a unique illustration of a Leafs player skating. Hockey fans would buy the latest game program for the latest info about their favourite team. As early as the 1920’s, portraits and caricatures captured the scope of what fans would find at the rink. The artist, Joseph Ernest Sampson became known for his portraits, figures and landscapes, working in both oil and watercolour. He is probably best known for the work of his company in producing high-quality silkscreens, the Sampson-Matthews silkscreens. Sampson's paintings are in such public collections as the , the Government of Ontario Art Collection, the Canadian War Art Collection and elsewhere. 20 x 27 inches
