In 1972 the founders of a company named Hockey Diversified Inc. envisioned that each puck shot into the net to produce an official goal scored in an NHL hockey game would develop a degree of intrinsic collector value for hockey fans everywhere. The founders took this idea to the NHL and procured the rights to all such NHL pucks during regular season and playoff games for a period of five years. Pucks shot into the net for a goal were collected by the referees, given to the time keepers to label and then shipped to Hockey Diversified to further label with scoring details. The pucks were then marketed to the public by Hockey Diversified Inc. Unfortunately, this idea was ahead of its time and pucks sold poorly. The program lasted only two seasons, 1972-73 and 1973-74. Hockey Diversified Inc. dissolved shortly thereafter. Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified could be obtained by mail with the buyer’s choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that revealed which team-goal the puck accounted for. Dave Keon scored his 17th and 18th goal of the 1972-73 season during a game between the Toronto Maple leafs and the Los Angeles Kings. Maple Leaf Gardens was the site for this contest in which the Leafs prevailed 4-2. Keon, moved past George Armstrong and Frank Mahovlich for all time Leafs goals just 6 weeks prior to scoring with this Viceroy biscuit. This Puck was used to score the second of the two on night for his 305th career NHL goal. These pucks were collected by the referee and labeled with these designations with the players name who scored, the team, date, and the code of TML-1-124 meaning Toronto Maple Leafs 1-124 for the Leafs 124th total goal of the season. Keon led the team in goal scoring that season with 37, fresh off a new contract from then owner Harold Ballard. Really nice condition with signs of NHL use, this puck would fit anyone’s collection. Dave played for the Toronto Maple Leafs for 15 seasons before moving over to the WHA. After 6 seasons in the start up league, He came back to the NHL with the Hartford Whalers for 3 more NHL seasons and ended his career in 1982. Keon played in 1296 regular season games and added 92 more in the playoffs. Tallying 396 times and assisting on 590 more, Keon was an easy invite to the Hall Of Fame in 1986. Dave Keon also won four Stanley Cups with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1962, 1963, 1964 and the final one in 1967. He also became Captain of the Leafs in 1969, succeeding the great George Armstrong for that moniker.
