Universal, 1982. Few films from the Golden Age of horror in the 1980s have impacted popular culture as profoundly as John Carpenter’s The Thing. Released during the legendary “Summer of ’82,” which also brought us E.T., Tron, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Conan the Barbarian, Blade Runner, Poltergeist, and Mad Max: The Road Warrior, The Thing emerged as a chilling counterpart to these fantastical hits. This transformative summer reshaped Hollywood and filmmaking in ways that continue to resonate today. Carpenter’s reimagining of Howard Hawks’s classic B-movie, The Thing from Another World, based on John W. Campbell’s 1938 novella Who Goes There?, initially struggled for recognition amidst its contemporaries. Over time, however, it has become celebrated as one of the decade’s most significant films, renowned for its lasting impact on science fiction and horror. Its eerie atmosphere and groundbreaking special effects by Rob Bottin invited viewers to explore the mysteries within its icy Antarctic setting, forever changing the landscape of horror cinema. Originally belonging to Producer and Assistant Director Larry Franco, the production binder serves as a comprehensive reference guide, detailing crucial elements to ensure alignment throughout filming. It offers invaluable behind-the-scenes insights into the meticulous organization and creative vision that shaped this cinematic masterpiece. The binder is divided into three distinct sections: 1. SCRIPT, 2. CAST, and 3. NOTES. Preceding these are 21-photocopied production storyboards showcasing drawings of some of the film’s most dynamic and harrowing moments, including the iconic transformation of the dog into a malleable, tentacled creature. SCRIPT This section features a complete 114-page Final Draft screenplay by Bill Lancaster, intricately annotated by the script supervisor to document adjustments and key insights during production. Additionally, it includes the first 38-pages of the Second Draft screenplay, also marked with annotations, providing a glimpse into the narrative’s evolution. The screenplay encapsulates the tension and paranoia that define the film, with haunting dialogue and suspenseful pacing echoing throughout its icy corridors. CAST This section contains three typed “PRELIMINARY CAST LIST” pages, dated “REVISED: AUG. 24, 1981.” These pages detail the actors involved in the production, including their contact information, with the name “L. Franco” handwritten in red ink at the top left. Larry Franco, a key producer and assistant director, played an essential role in realizing Carpenter’s vision, exemplifying the collaborative spirit of the film’s production. NOTES The final section comprises 13-pages of standard college-ruled notebook paper filled with extensive handwritten notes pertinent to the production. The first page lists special effects items for the dog kennel, with quirky descriptors like “accordion dog” and “dog turning tentacles,” highlighting the innovative spirit of the visual effects team led by Rob Bottin. Subsequent pages detail necessary sculptures, such as “Dog head,” “New skin for chest,” and “Dog puppet,” showcasing the intricate planning required for the film’s groundbreaking practical effects. A concluding page includes a partial list of “COST REPORT NOTES,” reflecting the logistical challenges and budgetary considerations faced during the making of a film that would redefine horror. This unique production binder stands as a testament to John Carpenter’s artistic vision and the collaborative efforts that birthed a cult classic. It encapsulates the atmosphere of creativity, fear, and innovation that permeated the production of what has become a cornerstone of 1980s horror. Measuring approx. 11 x 12 x 3 in. Also including (1) original creme colored Press Kit folio from Universal City Studios Inc., containing 17-glossy 8 x 10 in. black and white stills from production, each with production name and information printed beneath image, along with 7-individually stapled packets of press release information on “Universal News” letterhead stationary including biographies for actors and members of production, synopsis, and other production information. Including 20+ copied black and white printed pages of articles regarding the film. Measuring 9 x 12 in. Exhibiting production use and handling. In very good to fine condition.
