Derek Smith was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in 1974, 10th round, 168th overall from the Ottawa 67’s of the OHA. Smith spent six years in Buffalo, his breakout season was 1979-80 when he recorded career high 24 goals to go with 39 assists. He also scored 12 points in 13 games. He was a 20-goal scorer the next season. Smith also set a career high with 43 assists in 69 games. On December 2nd, 1981, he was part of a blockbuster trade that sent him to the Detroit Red Wings. This heavy weight mesh Sandow jersey was worn by Derek Smith during the 1981-82 season with the Red Wings. It holds the 50th anniversary of the Clubs existence on the right chest providing a nice photo match to a 3 and a half by 5 and a half photo of Smith wearing this jersey, which will be included with your purchase. The patch is in the exact position and the jersey shows about half seasons long wear as Smith only played in 49 games that season so this was likely the only home jersey he was issued. On the front, the well-known Red Wings crest shows signs of many washings as does the 50th patch to go along with a nice repair on the belly and blood stains and stick marks near and along the hem. The right arm shows several board burns at the elbow with stick marks on the numbers as well as loose threads. The Left arm has a few unrepaired holes at the elbow with the identifiers being well worn with several loose threads. All the numbers and name plate show signs of many washings being very soft to the touch. The back has an all-original name plate, 2 repairs down the left side at the seem, black stick marks and the Sandow designation on the lower hem. The fight strap is also evident with the sewing running directly between both the back numbers. Inside this mesh gamer shows many loose threads on the identifiers and some pilling under both arms. The Sandow tagging remains and is a size large along with the washing instructions underneath. Very nice example of a game used jersey from the storied franchises 50th year in the NHL. Derek Smith played his junior hockey for the Ottawa 67's and scored an impressive 52 goals in the 1972–73 campaign. He backed up the performance with a 47-goal season the next year and this was enough to garner the attention of the . Smith played seven years in the NHL, scored 78 goals and 116 assists.
