ABC TV, 1966-68. Screen matched William Shakespeare figural bust constructed of cast fiberglass components, expertly studio painted to appear as bronze metal. The hinged head of the figure manually tilts backwards to reveal a white gumdrop light and metal bezel above a graduated dial knob. An instantly recognizable prop that was a signature of the groundbreaking, wildly creative TV franchise that played a significant part in the genesis of the comic book-to-mainstream media market that pervades our culture to this day. The Shakespeare bust serves as a quintessential symbol of the show’s clever blend of highbrow culture and campy humor, capturing the essence of the dynamic between “Batman” (West) and “Robin” (Burt Ward). This iconic piece of art functions as a secret switch that activates the entrance to the Batcave, showcasing the show’s penchant for whimsical gadgets and secret identities. The juxtaposition of Shakespeare—a revered literary figure—alongside the caped crusader highlights the series’ playful irony and appeals to fans’ love for both literature and comic book lore. Its frequent appearances have solidified its status as a fan favorite, embodying the cleverness and charm that define the series. The bust’s role as a gateway to adventure resonates with viewers, making it an enduring symbol of the show’s unique legacy. The prop bust measures 12.5 x 20 x 9.5 in., and is highly visible in most episodes of the iconic, early superhero series. Exhibiting age and production use. From the personal collection of the legendary Greg Jein. In vintage very good condition. Comes with LOA from Batman and The Green Hornet executive producer William Dozier.
