The 34th NHL All-Star Game was played in Landover, Maryland on February 9, 1982. For the first time since 1972, the NHL introduced a new design for the All-Star game uniforms with many stars scattered around the jersey. The 1981-82 season was his ‘coming out party’ as he was having his best NHL season with 36 goals at the time of the All-Star Game. The talk was if he could beat the Toronto Maple Leafs season goal scoring record of 48 by Frank Mahovlich. So, the spotlight was on Vaive in this game and he didn’t disappoint scoring the opening goal of the game for the Campbell Conference at 2:32 of the first period. It was his first ASG goal in his first of three consecutive All-Star game appearances. Incidentally, Vaive shattered the scoring record of the ‘Big M’ by ending up with 54 goals, the first Leaf to score 50 or more in a season. And he followed up with 51 and 52 goal seasons. This would be a nice addition to any jersey collection based on the rarity, pleasing look and the player’s history and the autograph by Rick Vaive.
