The 30th Annual NHL All-Star Game was played at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver on January 25, 1977. This replica model is based on the vibrant orange and black jersey worn by Leafs’ star defenceman Borje Salming for the Wales Conference team. The Wales All-Star coach Scotty Bowman of the Stanley Cup winning Montreal Canadiens played Salming extensively in the 4-3 victory over the Campbell Conference team. The 1976-77 season was special for the ‘King’ as his Leaf teammates crowned the Swedish player. It started with his outstanding performance with Sweden in the Canada Cup that earned him a standing ovation at Maple Leaf Gardens even though he was on the opposing side. Salming was voted to the 1976-77 First All-Star Team and tallied 78 points in 76 games, his best point season in the NHL. This was the second of three consecutive All-Star games that Salming played in and was also selected to the NHL team vs the Russians in the 1979 Challenge Cup. Salming was the first European trained player to play 1,000 games in the NHL and the first Swedish born player inducted into the HHOF in 1996. Salming was the epitome of courage for leading the way for Europeans to play in the NHL while taking tremendous abuse and still excelling.
