Ben-Hur, 1959, MGM. *Withdrawn at the Request of the Academy*. Original Academy Award for the William Wyler-directed, epic passion play, which broke all budget and box office records of the day as well as profoundly advancing the art and technology of special FX in filmmaking. The iconic “Oscar" statuette remains the most esteemed and instantly recognizable symbol of cinematic achievement, embodying both the artistry of filmmaking and the enduring allure of Hollywood from its golden age to today. Sculptor George Stanley, who also created the "Muse Fountain" at the Hollywood Bowl, realized the original Cedric Gibbons' design. The statuettes are traditionally cast of Britannia metal, which is then plated in copper, nickel silver, and finally, 24-karat gold. This world-renown statuette measures 13 in. tall x 5 in. around with the widest measurement being the base. A curved 5.25 x 1.5 in. engraved plaque affixed to the front of the base reads, “Academy First Award To A. Arnold Gillespie and Robert Mac Donald (Visual Effects) and Milo Lory (Audible Effects) for the Special Effects in Ben-Hur." A 1.5 x .5 in. engraved brass badge affixed to the back of the base reads “Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences 1959." The importance of this technical award cannot be underestimated as Ben-Hur introduced groundbreaking special effects, including the use of wire-work for chariot races, which allowed for more dynamic and thrilling action sequences. Additionally, the film employed innovative techniques in miniatures and matte paintings to create expansive sets, enhancing its epic scale. Variations of many of these innovations are still used in practical film FX today. This Oscar exhibits expected age, handling, rubbing to gold plate, and expected oxidation overall. Also included with the lot are (10+) items of ephemera relating to the nomination and win, among them congratulatory letters to Arnold Gillespie from legendary producer (and “fixer") Eddie Mannix, MGM vice president Benjamin Thau, MGM general manager Raymond Klune, and others, as well as pieces of a prop ship from production. The prop ship pieces are accompanied by an LOA from Randall Gilmore of Wehrenberg Theaters. In vintage, good condition.
