Nice milestone Aluminum stick from the Great One from March 5th, 1991. The game was played at the Capital Center in Washington, and this is the stick he used to notch his 1,400th NHL career assist. The tape on the shaft reads as follows. March 5/91 Washington Capitals - Capital Centre Wayne Gretzky 1400 NHL Career Assist (G-T. Granato A-W. Gretzky, T. Sandstrom) meaning goal Tony Granato, assist to Gretzky and Sandstrom. The butt end also says 1400 NHL Career assist and is marked in pen, and A82 in black marker. This is a type of coding system that Peter Millar used. It was later switched to the actual game in the NHL schedule to make it easier to remember. This was acquired from Wayne’s Roller Hockey Rink in Los Angeles when it closed down in 2004 and was acquired at that time. The writing is in Millar's hand. Nice baby powder remnants all over the blade along with some really nice slices and puck marks. No one in the NHL has 1,400 assists to this day and will likely be one of several of Gretzky’s records that will never be broken. The stick has Gretzky’s name on the blade and shaft and is taped properly on the blade and has Jack the Gripper affixed to the butt end. Hard to find Gretzky sticks with provenance and Milestone implications and Studio auctions is very proud to showcase the ones offered in this auction. The letter from the Roller Rink is from Douglas Jones. Doug is Wayne Gretzky's brother-in-Law. Wayne Gretzky played 20 seasons in the NHL for four teams from 1979 to 1999, retiring at the age of 38. Nicknamed "the Great One", he has been called the greatest ice hockey player ever by many sportswriters, players, The Hockey News, and the NHL itself, based on extensive surveys of hockey writers, ex-players, general managers and coaches. Gretzky is the leading career goal scorer, assist producer and point scorer in NHL history, and has more career assists than any other player has total points. He is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season, a feat he accomplished four times. In addition, Gretzky tallied over 100 points in 15 professional seasons, 13 of them consecutive. At the time of his retirement in 1999, he held 61 NHL records: 40 regular season records, 15 playoff records, and 6 All-Star records.
