Concept Sketch from Raiders of the Lost Ark

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, 1981, Paramount. Production made ILM concept sketch accomplished in sepia colored pencil on 11 x 14 in. artists leaf, depicting concepts for the “Angels of Death" puppets. The "ghost" effects coming from the Ark of the Covenant were achieved primarily through a combination of miniature puppets in a water tank, with added cloud effects, and special optical techniques to blend them seamlessly with the live action footage, creating the ghostly, transparent appearance; this technique is often referred to as "cloud tank" animation, developed by visual effects artist Doug Trumbull and previously used in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
