Bobby Orr changed the game when he broke into the NHL in 1966. His end to end rushes and prolific scoring from the defenceman position, had never been seen before. He took the league by storm and scored 13 goals and added 28 assists which gave him the Calder Cup, awarded to the leagues top rookie performer. Orr was second in the Norris trophy race in that rookie season, awarded to the top defenceman. He would go on to win that award 8 times in a row over the next 8 years after changing the role of the position. Very few players have come along in the NHL to make such an impact and Orr was the man who did. This amazing Northland game used stick is in perfect used condition, showing no cracks or damage other than from NHL game wear. Many from this era show age cracks but this one is awesome! The blade is taped in Bobby Orr rookie fashion, seen in the photos as he only taped the end of the blade. The blade has been shaved on both sides to take off the fibreglass tape that was affixed at the Northland manufacturing plant for added strength. Orr took this off for better puck control and feel and this is a common trait during his first season or two. Nice puck marks adorn the front and back of the blade of this now 57 year old piece of history. Fully intact accent tape of the three ring variety are seen as we move up the shaft, these fell off on many sticks from this era. Stamped just above those rings is a Davenports Super Service 525 Providence Highway, the rest is illegible. ORR is stamped mid shaft and was likely one of the first orders he received with his name stamped on it, photos show Orr using a stick with his name in black marker from very early in the season. Northland Custom pro stampings and Glass fused are seen as we move up towards the double sided stamp of Northland Skis. St. Paul, Minn. USA. Lie No 5 and left also can be seen toward the taped butt end. This heavily taped butt end is also indicative of his first couple years as a pro in corn roll fashion. The photos also depict the same graphics on this Orr rookie lumber John Bucyk has signed the stick and there are a couple others that have faded and can't be read. This stick, wielded by the great Bobby Orr, offers a rare chance to add a perfect game used stick to a Hall of Fame collection. Orr's record of 2 Stanley Cups and the flying goal in March of 1970 to win the Stanley Cup, will be forever etched in minds of all hockey fans and sports enthusiasts alike. NHL records and pioneering the defensive position have immortalized him in the annals of sports legends. Great stick all around in every aspect of game used collecting. This amazing stick was originally acquired by Les Dunbar, a well known Police officer from the Boston Area. Les was known for collecting sticks from the Bruins and his signed letter is included. Bobby Orr hails from Parry Sound Ontario. He played his junior hockey for the Oshawa generals and in his 3 seasons there, racked up 107 goals and 280 points. In the NHL he would go on to win the Art Ross Trophy in 1970 and 1975 for leading the league in scoring, the Hart Trophy for league MVP three times, Conn Smythe trophy for Playoff MVP twice and inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979. And then there was "The Goal," immediately a proper noun in Boston, that Orr scored 40 seconds into overtime of Game 4 of the 1970 Stanley Cup Final against the St. Louis Blues. Tripped by Blues defenseman Noel Picard, Orr took flight in front of St. Louis goalie Glenn Hall an instant after having scored the Cup winner, arms outstretched, howling with joy. He was frozen in midair in what would become one of hockey's most famous photographs, his flight immortalized in a statue outside Boston's TD Garden.
